Ask the Tropers:
Pop-Culture Isolation pt2
After the last thread, I went ahead and commented out all the examples that were general, which included entire categories like Comic Books.
I'd like to go ahead and cutlist both the Food and Drink and Other
subpages. They are even worse than the main page, full of trivia like how Chinese food in America isn't Chinese (which isn't even an example of PCI) and "TONS of Internet models and celebrities that are made famous through the net are more or less obscure in pure mainstream media." which is so general as to be useless.
I'm not going to cutlist until there is consensus here.
Edited by laserviking42Trope names and equals sign
So, I discovered that on some pages like Redemption Equals Death and Death Equals Redemption, the word "equals" is written out on the Wiki Word titles. However, on some pages like Intelligence Equals Isolation and Defeat Equals Explosion, the Wiki Word titles include the equals sign ("=") in it.
In this case, what's the best possible way to rename some of the pages that include the equals sign for consistency? Should we keep the equals sign or write the trope name with the "equals" word?
Edited by gjjonesTroper uncommenting out ZCEs, some rudeness
It was brought up on the ZCE thread that Queen Adrian uncommented out some ZC Es without adding context on Webcomic.Pandoras Tale. I looked through their edit history to see if this was frequent behavior and I ended up finding that they deleted this entry on SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped.Video Games:
- Pokmon Black and White mentions that you should try to get along with people who have different views from yourself. Take one look at any political debate, especially those around major political parties and those on the internet, and you'd know how much that anvil really needed to be dropped.
With the edit reason:
"Oh, fuck off. People's rights are not on a similar scale to whether or not pineapple goes on pizza."
Regardless of context, the edit reason was quite rude. Didn't find a lot of other problems looking through their edits (granted I didn't look a lot, maybe there are others but I didn't see them on a cursory glance) but based on what I did find should something be done?
Edited by themayorofsimpletonDo these examples sound like complaining? Live Action TV
I was looking at Characters.Cobra Kai Other Characters and found two examples of Counselor Blatt that sounded off, especially the second one, which feels like nattering and is full of grammatical errors:
- Karma Houdini: Everybody in this show will make some errors, and will have to pay for them. Everybody, but this woman. She's the most incompetent counselor EVER, being unable to stop bullying in the first season, unable to stop a fight becoming a battle in season 2, and in season 3 not only she's unable to stop the tensions (which is part of her JOB) but she's making it worse and worse. Yet, she doesn't pay for making the lives of their students miserable.
- No Sympathy: With a little of The Millstone thrown in. The lives of EVERYBODY in the show (yes, even Kyler's) would be better if this woman was not there. She's the closest being in fiction to a living, breathing (and incompetently ignorant) Diabolus ex Machina!
- It becomes sidiculous when she grounded the Miyagi team for rough play during a football match, yet she released the Cobra Kai team for the exact same behaviou. She didn't even ask to the P.E. teacher that sent both the groups!
- And is beyond absurd when the new Cobras started to harass students, when they broke Dimitri's arm, and drew a dick on his plaster. Yet this woman didn't do ANYTHING. It seems that her only reason to be, is to make everything worse.
- It becomes sidiculous when she grounded the Miyagi team for rough play during a football match, yet she released the Cobra Kai team for the exact same behaviou. She didn't even ask to the P.E. teacher that sent both the groups!
Does anyone feel like this is complaining?
Where would these tropes go?
I was about to add these tropes on to a few pages, but I wanted to check that they were going to the right ones (main page, characters, trivia, or YMMV):
How to edit the descriptions of video examples
This is a general question, but is there a way to edit the descriptions for the video examples? Because I noticed some of them have a few spelling and/or grammatical errors that require fixing.
Tips for Quotes?
So I've been regularly working on this works page (Dream SMP to be exact) with a few other people, and one thing we have a problem with is its Quotes page. We deem pretty much all of what's in the page to be iconic to the work, but at the same time, the quotes feel waaaaaay too long. What tips do you guys have for Quotes pages? Is there a limit to how long it should be before it gets too much? Are quotes limited to just one person saying something, or can it also be a dialogue between two or more people? Help very much appreciated :D
Phlebotinum Rebel Examples
Would Cassandra Cain and Will Harper and Superboy from the Young Justice show count as examples?
Cass was subjected to a brutal training regime to mold her into the ultimate assassin and warrior by depriving her of speech and making her focus on reading body language. However, when Cass killed a man for the first time and read the pain and trauma of his body as he died, she turned on her father and became a superhero to atone for her murder.
Will was a clone of the captured Roy Harper created by the Light to infiltrate the heroes as a Manchurian Agent. After discovering this deception, he aided the heroes in defeating the Light. Meanwhile, Superboy was created by the Light to kill and replace Superman if he proved to be a threat to their goals but was swayed to the good side by the heroes.
Edit War on YMMV/IndianaJonesAndTheKingdomOfTheCrystalSkull
History for YMMV.Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
xtro deleted the entry for Critical Backlash with no reason.
I restored the entry because there was no reason for deletion.
xtro deleted the entry again, making this into an Edit War for the following reason: "The contested sequel entry covers this point adequately"
The Contested Sequel entry does not cover the point because liking a movie and thinking a movie isn't as bad as everyone says are two different things. You can think a movie isn't that bad but still not like it. As you can see from their edits, xtro has
a
habit
of
deleting
YMMV
entries
with
no
reasons
, and Trivia
tropes
too

Possible Sockpuppet?青苹果2019最新电视剧,让我尝尝女人的滋味
On Undertale, troper cfo34hjich added these entries under Unintentionally Unsympathetic. These were originally added by ZoicAlcelaphine
, who has since been banned, and cfo34hjich
is a rather new account. I suspect they're a sockpuppet.
Problems with a troper's posts
Toony Explorer 24 has made several posts recently that suggest their command of English is sorely lacking, including run-on sentences, misspellings, and just plain gibberish. They're also prone to ZCEs. Examples in Shark Tale:
- Dirty Coward: Was this when his mistakes occur or was about to be killed by a shark, but tries to make a money scheme to get away from his crimes.
- Insufferable Imbecile: Lacks a ton of intelligence or common sense being an Idiot Hero who is Too Dumb to Live, and yet he is a very annoying, a total jerk and a unlikable, idiotic character throughout the movie, one whom tries to resolve things at the end of the movie in spite of being superifical and an complete moron however.
[Note well that it apparently took them three serial tweak tries to settle on the last version of the second example]
They also have an odd notion of such concepts as Buffoonish Tomcat. Their edits over there include:
1. Bad indentation use:
- Zigzagged in The Aristocats. Alley cat Thomas O'Malley may not be as refined as the sophisticated, well-bred society cat Duchess, but that doesn't stop him from being smooth and he's certainly streetwise. On the other hand, there are also a number of moments where he's the butt of the joke.
- Not to mention that some cats in the film are seen as Butt Monkeys or even Klutzes, when fighting Edgar as a example
.
- Not to mention that some cats in the film are seen as Butt Monkeys or even Klutzes, when fighting Edgar as a example
2. Adding a caption to the page image that is spoken by an entirely different character from the one pictured. The picture is of Tiger from An American Tail, but they added a quote by Mittens from Bolt beneath it.
3. Shoehorning. Listing Mittens as an example strikes me as going beyond the concept of tropes being flexible.
- Also an downplayed version of a Rare Female Example: Mittens, from Bolt
, she ain't no stupid cat per say, in spite of being yelled one when trying what Bolt did with earning food at a trailer and served with a frying pan
, however she is occasionally prone to slapstick jokes and/or slapstick situations.
4. Inserting Youtube links in trope descriptions liberally. My understanding is that this should be used only as a last resort.
They're leaving what looks like a good sized mess for others to clean up, if what I see is an indication.
Advice wanted, please.
Edited by BoltDMCLime - what form of Example Sectionectomy?
I came across a fanfic listing Lime as a trope, and as I seemed to recall the trope in question being No Examples Please, I visited the trope page to double-check. Thing is, while the page does list it as "No examples" and links to Example Sectionectomy, it doesn't specify which type it falls under. Definition-Only Pages? No On-Page Examples? In-Universe Examples Only?
There are also a few other trope pages linking to Example Sectionectomy that don't appear to specify the type of limitation.
Edited by Willowleaf24What's the policy on ghostwicking?
A user by the name of Ariachus recently made an edit to one of my entries on Bowdlerise.Video Games that added a wick to Dragon Spirit, a game that doesn't have a page, which is why I didn't make it a wick. It's a ghostwick now (the only one on the entire page), and I'm wondering: is this a thing that's generally okay to do, and if not, is it alright if I go ahead and remove it?
Tough Act to Follow - Where should it go?
I added the following entry to The Death of Superman:
- Tough Act to Follow: The film is generally considered one of the best in the DC Animated Movie Universe, due to its great action scenes, much more likable depictions of Superman and Lois Lane, and offering a fresh take on the comic book classic while still being rather faithful to it. In comparison, its direct sequel was much more polarizing, with many fans claiming that it failed to reach the standards set by its predecessor. As a result, it grossed less than a third of this film's gross totals.
Tropers/rixion has since moved it to the YMMV page of the film's sequel. However, it's my understanding that Tough Act to Follow applies to the work that attains success, not to the ones that followed it. Do I have permission to restore the example without entering Edit War territory?
Franchise page with only works in two namespaces
What to do with Gridman Universe? It only has works in two namespaces, Series/ and Anime/.
BTW, I posted in "Creating Franchise Pages Wherever Appropriate" thread without response.
Edited by KuruniDiscussion page of a work inaccesible in mobile
For some reason, the discussion page for Let's Play.Dream is inaccesible only in mobile (when not on desktop version). There's only Edit Page, Edit History, Related (wicks), and Reviews when accesing on mobile.
Problem Troper
Guckerman appears to have several issues with their editing:
- Natter and complaining. Their edit
on the Family Guy Flanderization page deserves special mention.
- Putting non-YMMV tropes on YMMV pages.
- Not linking tropes properly, so that the trope appears without a link (i.e. putting Nightmare Fuel instead of Nightmare Fuel). This is especially common in their edits.
These problems stretch as far back as 2019.
note on DumbDodoBird
Dumb Dodo Bird has a note at the end of its trope description to the effect that just having a dodo appear in a work is enough, and that despite the trope name the dodo does not have to be dumb or comedic. Surely this is not kosher?
Requesting mod revert
So yesterday I stumbled on Characters. In The Pantheon while cleaning Bi the Way wicks; the page was in awful shape, with ZCEs all over the place (with some just saying "played with" for some reason???), empty folders, two uses of Bi the Way, a bad trope pothole, and even a slashed trope. I sent the page creator, Druid Dan, mis-play and ZCE notifiers when I was finished cleaning it up; since then I've discovered they've been systematically reverting my edits. I'd like a mod revert to get it through this guy's head to not do that.
Edited by Crossover-EnthusiastMisuse of Mythology Gag?
i don't mean to call anyone out, i'm just here to learn from my own mistakes.
this bit i added to Sephiroth's Mythology Gag entry in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 76 to 81 got removed (in bold):
with the following reason:
i'm just curious what my mistake was, since Mythology Gag doesn't seem like it's limited in scope to how mundane the reference is, just that the thing referenced isn't in the same canon/universe otherwise it'd be Continuity Nod. unless, of course, i missed something while skimming the article (that happens to me a lot, unfortunately).
Edited by FreecomTropers/CandleMan87
I wanted to note here that CandleMan87, who has already been suspended for rogue launching Masculine, Feminine, Androgyne Trio also added two pictures while leaving the copy-pasted "some caption text" in Characters.Gwain Saga during their return edit spree
. A minor problem, but a little something for the mods to bring up to them regarding editing standards on the wiki.
Can memes get work pages?
I noticed Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons has a work page. The thing is, it's a fanfiction meme, not a work. In fact most of the tropes just list general fanfiction trends. Is this allowed?
Re-adding entries cut by the cleanup thread
So on the Fan-Preferred Couple Thread I brought up a Olicity entry that was to focused on complaining here. However after a long discussion it was decided to cut here
. Mostly due to concerns that it was more fit for Broken Base. As it's still quite popular, while being contoverisal, and no other Oliver ship has quite matched it back in it's hay day, and still his most popular on several sites. However Lemia recently added
an entry about them.
- Oliver/Felicity started out as this trope, becoming so popular with fans compared to Oliver's canonical romance with Laurel that the show made it canon in season 3. However, their promotion to Official Couple caused them to suffer from Shipping Bed Death, which led to it falling out of favor with several fans who came to want Oliver to be with Sara or Laurel instead.
Now I actually like this entry and think it gets the point across with out complaining. But it was still cut by a cleanup thread. This isn't the only time the troper has done this. They also changed the Finn/Poe to focus more on Kylo/Rey. However it was decided by the thread here
that they don't count, due to a being almost canon, with both directors voicing they're support, and not having any real competition at all on the canon front.
Help needed
I've recently created a fanfic page for my fanfiction but there's nothing much there yet. Would it be too much to ask for people to edit and improve my page? I'm brand new here so i don't know what I'm doing. Page is right here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Team Lightway
